It is my privilege as the Guest Editor to present the April 2014 edition of the Perspectives publication for SIG 12. This issue contains information about assessment in augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) from a variety of perspectives ranging from assessment for apps to assessing language development in people who use AAC. Articles were submitted by clinicians providing intervention to a variety of individuals across the lifespan.
New perspectives from the view of interprofessional education encouraged us to review assessment of persons who use AAC from different aspects and professions requiring the use of a variety of methods and equipment. This issue provides current analysis of AAC assessment in school age children, application of traditional assessment strategies (language sample analysis) to evaluate language development of individuals who use AAC, the role of an occupational therapist in the AAC assessment process, and the assessment for AAC within a long-term acute care medical facility. Finally, in the light of the recent explosion of mobile technology and use of apps, it would remiss not to include an article on the assessment process to determine an appropriate app for the purpose of communication.
