Welcome to this issue of Perspectives—my first welcome to you after officially assuming the role of Coordinator for the Division. In addition, I wanted to let you know that Mary Ann Lowe has assumed the role of Associate Coordinator. Please know that Mary Ann and I welcome your input and involvement as we embark on these volunteer positions! You can contact us at amy.goldman@temple.edu or lowem@nova.edu.
We welcome Mary Ann Abbott to the Division 12 Steering Committee.
Although it is June and the conclusion of this school year, it is a good time for those of you who practice in the schools, or who see school-aged individuals, to reflect on the AAC needs of these students with complex communication needs. The content in this issue includes information on implementing school-based AAC, including examples of district-wide programs (Cannon et al.). Van Tatenhove offers practical advice on building language competence with students who use AAC, and Hill addresses critical issues in data collection and monitoring AAC intervention in the schools. A variety of important perspectives (pun intended!) are offered by Warren and Warren as well as Hurd. Surely, this issue will provide you with “food for thought” to last the entire summer!
