Welcome to the very first online edition of Perspectives on AAC! As you may recall, awhile back ASHA decided to “go green” and migrate all of the Division member publications to an Internet format. If you've been following this transition, you may remember that the online publication of Perspectives was piloted with sub-groups of a few divisions in 2006 and 2007. Members gave input on their preferences. While there were differing views, the majority preferred the online option for several reasons. One was the convenience of the online option; those affiliates found online content easier to access and store than paper copies. Also cited was the ability to search content more easily and the ease with which prior issues can be accessed. Some affiliates noted that the electronic versions are often more accessible to people with disabilities who use assistive technology (e.g., screen readers) to access information. Finally, some affiliates preferred the online format for environmental reasons, understanding that some, but not all, affiliates will go on to print paper copies. Member feedback indicated that having both formats available was not a preferred option given the added costs associated with printing and mailing a paper copy in addition to providing online access.
