Recent events have highlighted the need to promote the position of the National Joint Committee for the Communication Needs of Persons with Severe Disabilities (NJC) regarding service eligibility for persons with severe disabilities. The (NJC) is made up of member organizations including the American Association on Mental Retardation, the American Occupational Association, ASHA, the Council for Exceptional Children, Division 4 Communication Disabilities and Deafness, RESNA, TASH, and the United States Society for Augmentative and Alternative Communication. The focus of the joint committee’s efforts for more than a decade has been to offer an interdisciplinary perspective on communication issues that confront persons with severe disabilities.
