Interest in evidence-based health care (EBHC) has grown exponentially since the term was first coined in the 1990s (Evidence-based Medicine Working Group, 1992; Guyatt, 1991). Professional organizations and training programs for health care professionals have moved from whether to teach EBHC to how to teach it, resulting in an explosion in the number of courses, workshops, and seminars offered in this practice (Alguire, 1998). Familiarity with its terminology has even extended into the lay press (Hopcroft, 2003).
All of this growth and interest in the field leads to consideration of the challenges and limitations to practicing and teaching EBHC (Straus & McAlister, 2000). Some of the criticisms of EBHC are misunderstandings and misperceptions of the practice, such as the concerns that it ignores patient values and preferences and promotes a cook-book approach. However, some parts of this discussion have highlighted limitations unique to the practice of EBHC.
