Our special interest division has participated with several other divisions in the development of Professional Competencies in Medically-Related Speech-Language Pathology. The following draft competencies are currently under review by our Steering Committee and will be reviewed by the Board of Division Coordinators this spring. The competent speech-language pathologist (SLP) has received preparation in the following areas, as they relate to human communication, swallowing and development across the life span:
(1) The speech-language pathology in a medically-related work setting should be able to demonstrate a basic knowledge and understanding of health care facility practices, the common diseases and conditions affecting human communication, swallowing, and development across the life span and their medical, surgical, and behavioral treatment, including knowledge of:
