The Rehabilitation Engineering Research Center (RERC) on Communication Enhancement is the first “virtual” RERC. In contrast to the single location center models of the past, the AAC-RERC partners don’t work down the hall from each other, share a laboratory, meet for lunch or chat over coffee. This means that the AAC-RERC has had to develop new ways in which interaction can occur among its partners and with the broader AAC community. The AAC-RERC has thus been forced to devise a range of virtual communication and collaboration strategies in order to pursue its mission, which is “to improve AAC technologies that can further the development of communication, language, natural speech, discourse skills, and literacy of persons with significant communication disorders.”
