Families, Cultures, and AAC is a cross-platform, interactive, bilingual (English and Spanish) CD-ROM for use with families, professionals, students, and others involved in AAC service delivery. Designed by Alan VanBiervliet of the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences and Howard P. Parette of Southeast Missouri State University in collaboration with groups of family members from various cultures and professionals actively involved in the AAC decision-making process, the CD is the culmination of 5 years of research and development.
The CD consists of seven parts: Introduction to Families, Cultures, and AAC; Respecting Family Values and Cultures; Team Collaboration Issues; Helping Families use AAC; Family Views; Funding AAC; and Working With an Interpreter. The seven parts are presented in an interesting, fully interactive manner that includes approximately 2 hours of instructional video segments, interactive learning games, and links to dozens of Internet Web sites. Additionally, the CD contains a multimedia AAC glossary, printable documents, a large concept paper, and AAC Focus Group transcripts.
